Leadership is more than decision-making

Leadership isn't just about making decisions - it's about inspiring and empowering your team.

In my years working with business leaders of all different types and sizes of organisation, I've observed that the most effective leaders share these traits:

- They listen more than they speak. Great leaders understand that wisdom often comes from their team. They create space for others' voices and ideas.

- They lead by example. These leaders don't just talk the talk; they walk the walk. They embody the values and work ethic they expect from their team.

- They empower others to make decisions. Effective leaders trust their team. They delegate not just tasks, but authority, creating a sense of ownership and accountability.

- They embrace vulnerability. Strong leaders aren't afraid to admit when they're wrong or don't have all the answers. This authenticity builds trust and encourages open communication.

- They continuously seek to learn and grow. The best leaders are lifelong learners, always looking for ways to improve themselves and their leadership skills.

Let me share a real-life example that illustrates these traits in action:

I once worked with a CEO, let's call her Sarah, who was struggling with high turnover and low morale in her startup. Through our coaching sessions, we identified that her leadership style was the root cause - she was micromanaging, rarely admitting mistakes, and making all decisions unilaterally.

We worked together to develop these five key traits. Sarah started holding regular listening sessions with her team, actively seeking their input on major decisions. She began to share her own challenges and uncertainties, showing vulnerability that her team found relatable and inspiring.
