‘But what if i fail?’
This fear holds back so many talented individuals and businesses from reaching their true potential. As a coach, I've seen it paralyse even the most capable professionals.
Let me share a real-life approach I use with my clients to overcome this fear in the moment:
1. Acknowledge the fear: It's normal to be afraid. Write down exactly what you're afraid of happening.
2. Analyse the worst-case scenario: What's the absolute worst that could happen? Often, it's not as catastrophic as we imagine.
3. Create a contingency plan: How would you handle this worst-case scenario? Having a plan reduces anxiety.
4. Identify potential gains: List all the possible positive outcomes. What could you learn? How might you grow?
5. Reframe failure as feedback: Every 'failure' provides valuable information. How can you use this to improve?
6. Take small steps: Break your goal into smaller, less intimidating actions. Each small success builds confidence.
7. Celebrate the attempt: Recognise that taking action despite fear is a win in itself.
I know fear of failure only too well, and can reflect on numerous occasions where I've allowed it to take control. However, with practice you can create safety and contain the fear enough to start taking those small steps.
Remember, courage isn't the absence of fear—it's taking action despite the fear.
