Tune In To Your Nervous System
One thing I wish I'd understood better earlier in my coaching career is the profound impact the nervous system can have on clients and their ability to achieve their goals.
I've been working with a client recently who has been experiencing significant procrastination in their business. In the past, I might have pushed them to "smash their goals" and power through the resistance. But I've come to realise there's a better way.
Instead, we've been focusing on calming their nervous system and tuning into what level of discomfort feels appropriate and manageable for them. By regulating their nervous system and finding that sweet spot, it allows them to take aligned action from a place of groundedness rather than overwhelm.
When we're in a dysregulated nervous system state, it's nearly impossible to show up as our best selves in our life and work. The procrastination and avoidance are often a self-protective mechanism. By compassionately listening to the wisdom of the body, we can figure out the right level of intensity to stay within our window of tolerance.
This approach of nervous system attunement has been far more effective and sustainable for my client than trying to force productivity through sheer willpower. They're taking meaningful steps forward in their business from a foundation of self-trust and emotional resilience.
If you find yourself frequently procrastinating on your goals, I invite you to get curious about what your nervous system might be trying to tell you. Slowing down to regulate and resource yourself could be the key to unlocking your capacity to take easeful action in your business and life.
