Unmasking Imposter Syndrome

I ran a training session recently to a business all about how regulating our nervous system is a key component to managing anxiety, overwhelm and stress.

As a leader, your ability to think clearly and make sound decisions is crucial to your success and the success of your team. However, what many of us don't realise is that our nervous system plays a significant role in our cognitive abilities, especially when it's activated by stress or self-doubt.

One of the prime disruptors of our nervous system is imposter syndrome – the persistent feeling of inadequacy despite evident success. When we experience imposter syndrome, our nervous system goes into overdrive, triggering a fight-or-flight response that can cloud our judgment and hinder our ability to lead effectively.

The good news is that we can learn to regulate our nervous system and mitigate the impact of imposter syndrome on our leadership abilities.

Equally, by cultivating self-awareness and learning to recognise the signs of an activated nervous system, we can proactively address these challenges before they escalate.

As leaders, we have a responsibility to show up as our best selves for our teams and our organisations. By prioritising the regulation of our nervous system and learning to manage imposter syndrome, we can unlock our full potential as leaders and drive meaningful change in the world.

What strategies have you found effective for regulating your nervous system?

Mine? Getting out in nature with my dogs...here with Evie when it didn't rain every day! Real talk … I’m usually less smartly dressed when out with my dogs!
