what is fear-based leadership?
Throughout my career, I've encountered fear-based leadership more times than I care to count. From an HR leader instilling fear about workplace friendships to a recruitment boss whose meeting location choices signaled good or bad news, these experiences have left their mark.
Fear-based leadership is never a good strategy. It creates a toxic environment where:
- Innovation is stifled
- Open communication breaks down
- Employee well-being suffers
- Turnover increases
- Productivity declines
Instead, we need to focus on creating psychological safety and creating a performance environment rooted in empathy. This approach:
- Encourages risk-taking and creativity
- Promotes honest feedback and continuous improvement
- Boosts employee engagement and satisfaction
- Builds stronger teams and relationships
- Drives sustainable high performance
As leaders, it's our responsibility to cultivate a culture where people feel valued, supported, and empowered.
Have you experienced fear-based leadership? How did it impact you?
